We are pleased to announce that imgix now supports two additional image formats, WebP and SVG, as accepted inputs. We recognize that many of our clients rely on user-generated images, and so we strive to support as many image formats as possible. With our latest additions, our list of accepted inputs now includes 17 different image formats.
WebP
With its high compression ratios, the WebP format is becoming more pervasive and is now supported in Firefox as well as in Chrome. In addition to lossy and lossless compression, WebP also supports transparency and animation. Because of the format’s advantages, imgix has long supported WebP as an output format, allowing significant savings in image weight and therefore page speed. In fact, our auto=format
parameter helps you automatically serve WebP images to the browsers that support the format. Now, WebP is accepted as an input as well, which means user-provided WebP images can now benefit from all existing imgix API operations.
You don't have to make any changes to your existing implementation; just upload any WebP image to your current Source to try it out.
SVG
Scalable Vector Graphics, or SVGs, are uniquely versatile due to their scalability, high definition, and the fact that they can be manipulated with CSS. The format is widely supported across major browsers. One common use case for SVGs is logos and icons, which can then be used to watermark other images, as is often done in stock photos, product images, real estate photos, and other scenarios where visible brands are desired.
Here is an example of a watermarked image where the logo is an SVG file:
Because some users prefer that their SVGs are not modified and are simply served as pass-through images, the acceptance of SVGs as an input is currently an opt-in behavior. Please contact us if you would like to change the SVG behavior for your Sources.
